Did you know the Mountain Cur is a wonderful breed and one of the most urgent breeds in Illinois kill shelters? Also known as Feists, these dogs are affectionate, intelligent, come in a variety of colors, and make wonderful family pets.

They are also one of the hardest breeds to get into rescue, and the majority of them that end up in Illinois kill shelters are euthanized. There are eighteen purebred dog breeds that have "brindle" coloring, and the Mountain Cur is one of them. Their brindle coloring can range from pastel blonde to gray and silver, as well as solid brown, fawn and white.

Why is this breed of dog so urgent in Illinois? Many are mistaken as being mixed with "pit bull" due to their brindle coloring, which is not true. And of course, Illinois is not mountainous, so this breed has never had much exposure in our northern region. In southern Illinois, these dogs are known for their keen hunting abilities, but unfortunately they are also over bred and many end up dying in the kill shelters.

If you're looking for a loyal, loving affectionate dog, the Mountain Cur may be the right dog for you.

Illinois Animal Rescue is dedicated to saving this lovely breed of dog and needs your help. Please spread the word about this lovely breed and help the urgent Illinois Mountain Curs find homes!

Together we can make a difference in this wonderful breed's future in Illinois and beyond.
